If this is what prison is like, I wouldn’t mind breaking the law…
For those of you with a sense of humor and don’t mind a hotel that takes itself both seriously and not seriously at the same time, Hotel Katajanokka, a former prison turned hotel (yes, you read that right — it used to be a prison!), in Helskini, was a trip!
Check out all the jail references:

I love how the housekeeping uniforms are an ode to the past:

The best part is that while the rooms used to be jail cells, they’ve been remade with all the comforts you’d expect from a quality hotel. There’s definitely nothing creepy about staying here.

To top it all off, the hotel is located in a quite area in Helsinki, about a 10 minute walk from Kauppahalli and the harbor where all the ferries dock (not bad for an accommodation that doubles as a quirky Helsinki attraction). Plus, it was fun for Kimmy and I just to tell people we were staying in jail that night!
I’ve seen a few of these in Canada and Slovenia, but this one looks to be the nicest by far. I love the idea of turning these old buildings into something reusable again while leaving some of the ‘charm’!
Hi John! Oooh, this was the first time I’ve ever seen one of these. I had no idea there was more than one, but based on your comment, I’m glad the Helsinki one looks the nicest! 🙂
wow..I am impressed with the bathroom!!!! really??? So cool!!! I have been to Helsinki before but do not have great impression about this city. Maybe I should go again:)
Have a great day:)

Hey Tammy! Helsinki was a beautiful city, but the word “charming” doesn’t exactly pop in mind when I think about Helsinki (I’d think of “sophisticated” and “metropolitan” first). I did study in Sweden, though, so it was just nice for me to be back in this part of the world. That said, I don’t think I’d recommend someone go out of their way to Helsinki just because there are so many other unique cities in the world to visit first! BUT, if you do go to Helsinki, you should check out this hotel. haha
